WOMEN'S HOUSING PROJECT
Hello, tumblies.
My friend Melanie, from this blog asked me to partner with her in a project to rebuild the original Downtown Womens Center in DTLA, not far from where I live. Local designers and architects were asked to volunteer their time and expertise and all furnishings, etc. have to be donated, there is no money for anything.
Melanie and I were assigned the second floor living room and...

CUTE, EASY DIY HOSTESS GIFTS (OR FOR WHATEVER)
I planted too much basil. Like, way too much. I just read the back of my seed packet and it said only 3 plants per 12 inch planter. Soooo, I have some thinning to do, no?
Oops.
So, what to do with all those perfectly good Basil seedlings? Why not pot them and give them away as Hostess Gifts, or for whatever; like, maybe for a housesitter or a new neighbor. The possibilities are...

KITTEH GARDEN
I made a mini version of the garden beds that I buit this summer from scrap wood and planted catmint (like cat nip) and cat treats. I let the monsters outside today and they went right for it. Maybe this will stop Dash from dashing next door and invading the neighbors’ patio. Fingers crossed!
UPDATE: Dash is now running around the apartment, meowing at nothing. I think he is...
mintcakes asked: Thank you so much! My big hesitation about getting a worm kit is the heat in LA. I've read that they do best in temperatures of 40-90° F, but we just had a steady heatwave of at least 100° each day! How have your worms been doing in such hot weather?
BUILD A GARDEN BENCH AT KNOWHOW SHOP
LA PEEPS: I took a Wooden Utensil Making Class at the KnowHow Shop and I highly recommend them. They have a great shop and are really nice people to boot! $125 is a great price for this bench and the knowledge you will gain. Go for it!
knowhowshopla:
The Garden Bench class is an excellent introduction for anyone interested in working at the Knowhow Shop or as a gift for your favorite DIY...

3 TRELLISES FOR THE PRICE OF 1 (IKEA HACK)
I was shopping at IKEA the other day for a new duvet cover and stumbled across the FROST drying rack. My cucumbers are starting to really grow and trellises have been on my mind lately. In particular, these from Terra Trellis that cost a bajillion dollarz.
I love the moden feel, (as I’ve said before, I really don’t like garden-y stuff) but not the price tag. So when I...

PORTABLE FIREPLACE
Why hasn’t anyone thought of this before? Instead of everyone gathering around wherever the fire pit is, you bring the fire pit to wherever you are! Brill. The price is not listed on their website, which means I would prolly have to sell a kidney to buy them.
See the post on Design Milk.

MINI CAGED LIGHTS
These lights are hanging above the patio of my new favorite restaurant in DTLA, The Parish. I want! I wrote to Apartment Therapy to see if anyone knew where they were from and of course they are a million doll hairs.

VENEER BIRDHOUSE
I’ve seen wood veneer strips used to make light pendants, but I haven’t seen them used to make a birdhouse. Lowe’s Creative Ideas has this and other birdhouse tutorials.
There is also a video to this, and I think the birdhouse that the woman makes in this video looks way better than the ones pictured. The knot is hidden away, for one thing, and the colors she uses are...

MENTAL NOTE IF I EVER GET A HOUSE
I love living in DTLA. Love my outdoor patio. No plans to move. BUT, if we ever do get a house, I am building this shed. I LOVE IT!! The project is on Design Milk.

DIY MODERN LITTER BOX HIDER (IKEA HACK)
I’ve gotten a few emails now asking what my cat box situation is. I haven’t put my cat box on my blog because I built it way back in 2008 and honestly didn’t even think about it as a post. I just realized this cat box has lasted 4 years with 3 cats, moved house with us twice now and still looks great! I think that warrants a post, given that it’s held up so well....
